ATE Journal of Māori Art is an annual, peer-reviewed journal with an explicit focus on Māori art, artists and art movements.

Content for Volume Two considers the relationship between tāngata whenua and the wider Moananui-a-Kiwa and was developed during a wānanga held with participating writers, Dr Emalani Case, Hanahiva Rose; guest speakers Bridget Williams, Cassandra Barnett, Sean Mallon and Aroha Rangi. As with Volume One, we are supported by our editorial board, Professor Robert Jahnke, Sean Mallon and Professor Huhana Smith.

Articles in Volume Two reflect the breadth and beauty of ngā toi Māori including the Aotearoa Moana Nui A Kiwa Weavers, Maureen Lander, Rangi Hetet, Reweti Arapere, Pacific Sisters, Ngāti Porou carvers, Israel Randell, Ruth Buchanan, Ayesha Green and Bob Jahnke. We are also pleased to include a republished text from a rangatira of te ao Māori, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku.

ATE was launched in June 2019 by co-editors Matariki Williams (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Hauiti, Taranaki) and Bridget Reweti (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi). Volume Two launched in December 2020.

“There is still a place for a hard-copy journal with ATE’s particular focus, range of voices and contributions. We are reminded of the late Pacific Studies scholar Teresia Teaiwa, who urged indigenous scholars “…to make our own archives” and we see ATE advancing this never- ending and constantly urgent project.”
