Floored! brings together the fine art practices of an invited selection of New Zealand’s best artists with the skills of Dilana Rugs, Christchurch to make unique rugs designed by artists.

The ideas was proposed by Curator Tim Renner because it crosses the boundaries between what we typically see as high art and practical, everyday craftsmanship. ‘The result is beautiful and unique artwork that you can walk on.’

The rugs were commissioned for this project, with Ralph Paine, Kate Wells, Gavin Chilcott, Carole Shepheard, Richard Killeen, Michael Reed, Graeme Bennett, Fane Flaws, and Bing Dawe taking part.

Rugs are quite different from works on paper - the pile is coarser and has a texture that can be used creatively. Each artist has worked with the team at Dilana Rugs to develop designs that are uniquely their work and are successful in wool. The artist draws on his/her talents developed in their traditional media, the rugmakers using their skills in dyeing and carpet construction. Its an exciting connection, with some works taking several months from their inception to final completion.

Dilana Rugs are unique on the world for this sensitive and practical collaboration with recognised artists. Located in Christchurch, their wares have been exhibited in Australia and the United States. The workshops ability to produce work to the highest standard in New Zealand wool and execute the designs to the artists’ specifications has resulted in works of true distinction.
