In October 2023, a group of painters were invited to have a one-on-one session with senior Māori painter Emily Karaka at her studio in Glen Innes. Tira Walsh (Ngāti Wairere, Ngāti Hauā, Tainui), Tyrone Te Waa (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Hannah Ireland (Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi) attended.
This wānanga was built from our one-on-one sessions with artists, with a direct request to meet with the practioners that they have looked up to.
Hannah Ireland, artist attendee, said about the experience: “It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with Emily. Her generosity in sharing aspects of her life with the group reflected the special care and intimate understanding she has as a painter / advocate for tangata whenua. As a fellow wahine painter, it was encouraging to share space with someone who has paved the way for myself and many more to come.”
