This exhibition by Auckland based printmaker Stanley Palmer will be the first major exhibition of his paintings in a number of years.
The works were completed after a trip initiated by the Department of Conservation to the Poor Knights Islands off Whangarei Heads in 1990. The twenty-seven large scale paintings chart and record the artists response to that landscape.
Although Palmer is recognised as a printmaker, and there has been wide and extensive recognition of his prints throughout New Zealand, he has produced a number of paintings. It has been said that Palmer has a special place in the development of contemporary New Zealand art and this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue will provide, at last, a real appraisal of his work.
Palmer imparts in his work ‘a true vision of the physical being of New Zealand... capturing something of the mystery that lies within these landscapes.’ The artists careful and extensive research about the area and his empathy with the people who once lived at the Poor Knights is clearly visible. This gives the paintings an additional quality and inner life of their own.
