Peter Voulkos first came to prominence in 1949, winning the Potters Association Prize at the Ceramic National in Syracuse, New York. Through the establishment of ceramic schools at Black Mountain College, North Carolina and Ocis Arc Institute, Los Angeles, Voulkos revolutionized the functional brown pot into the sculptural expressive vessel now considered to be the distinctive style of American ceramics. At these schools and at The University of California, Voulkos taught ceramics to students who are now the most important mid-career potters in the USA - John Mason, Kenneth Price, Malcolm McClain, the list foes on.
A touring exhibition of his work has been arranged for exhibition at The Art Gallery of New South Wales and at Public Art Galleries in Melbourne and Queensland. The Fisher Gallery and the Dowse Art Museum will both present the exhibition.
