The focus over the next month will be on feminism, with the visit to New Zealand by one of the worlds great feminist artists – Judy Chicago.
Judy Chicago visiting New Zealand has provided the gallery with an opportunity to show that New Zealand too has many dedicated and outstanding feminist artists who continue to create work which develops feminist issues.
Thirty-five women artists from all over New Zealand have submitted work for an exhibition which celebrates a selection of women’s art between 1979 and 1999.
Conversations shows that feminist discussions have not abated; indeed all the works in the exhibition are political and continue to prompt further discussion.
There is a diversity of artistic approaches, including painting, sculpture, pen and ink drawing, and carpet; also included in the exhibition are a number of book works.
