Sorawit Songsataya:
Bronies

Sorawit Songsataya, Bronies, 2016 (still). Digital animation, 3 mins 17 secs. Commissioned by Te Tuhi, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

/

Bronies was originally commissioned for The Non-Living Agent at Te Tuhi in 2016. The animation was presented in the context of a larger installation by Songsataya, which included images printed on steel, 3D printed vases, and furniture. Bronies takes its title from the term for adult fans of My Little Pony, initially used on the internet image board 4chan. In some ways, this fan demographic complicates and challenges binary notions of masculinity. Furthermore, the animal-cultural fluidity in My Little Pony and in this work underlines the power of representation, and the multiplicity of identities we may wish to embody.

Sorawit Songsataya is currently based in Pōneke Wellington. His video-installation practice explores the many tangents that connect and redefine our understanding of subjectivity and ecology. In 2018, Songsataya received a Swedish Arts Grant to participate in a studio residency in Stockholm through IASPIS Konstnärsnämnden; he was artist in residence at the McCahon House earlier in the same year. Recent exhibitions include The Interior (solo), Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, 2019; Offspring of Rain (solo), Enjoy Contemporary Art Space, 2019; Jupiter (solo), Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, 2019 and Soon Enough: Art in Action (group), Tensta Konsthall, 2018.

All exhibitions are currently offsite due to disruptions caused by the Pakuranga Eastern Busway construction. The building remains open for classes and other activities. 21 William Roberts Road, Pakuranga, is the best address to enter into navigation apps to guide you to the free parking at our door.
