[Fully booked]

Join artist Claudia Kogachi to learn about the preparation of spam musubi (a vegan option will be provided). This is a favourite meal of Claudia and her obaachan (grandmother), Obaachan during the lockdown, Wahiawā, Hawaiʻi (2020) as pictured in Claudia’s work for Te Tuhi’s Project Wall.

Spam, the main ingredient in musubi, initially came to Hawaiʻi during WWII with the US military. Musubi was created in Japanese internment camps during the war, evolving over time into its contemporary form: a slice of grilled spam on top of rice, wrapped together with nori. Since that time musubi has become hugely popular in Hawaiʻi.

Claudia will give a brief introduction to her work, followed by the shared meal preparation and lunch. Miso soup, tea and a sweet will also be included. Bring a family member or friend and a good appetite.

Extra health precautions will be in place. If you register but become unwell on the day, please let us know, and stay home and get better.

All exhibitions are currently offsite due to disruptions caused by the Pakuranga Eastern Busway construction. The building remains open for classes and other activities. 21 William Roberts Road, Pakuranga, is the best address to enter into navigation apps to guide you to the free parking at our door.
