Eight toi Māori carvers came together at Te Tuhi in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from 28–29 November 2024 for a wānanga hosted by Papatūnga. The hui brought the artists together with visiting senior Indigenous carvers Mama Awhitia Tavioni (CK) and Gunvor Guttorm (Sápmi), who were both visiting Aotearoa at the same time.
Over a long weekend, the artists attended the opening of Gunvor’s work at Objectspace before spending a day carving and learning alongside Mama Awhitia and Gunvor at the Pacifica Arts Centre, followed by a day of shared carving at Te Tuhi. The wānanga provided an opportunity for the carvers to share knowledge, techniques and practice across Indigenous carving traditions.
