In 1958 Zena Abbott opened New Zealand’s first professional hand weaving studio. By employing and teaching women in this studio, she created a cottage industry which supplied handweaving to shops and galleries throughout New Zealand and also exported work to Australia.
Woven By Hand presents the textured fibre works of Abbott, a pioneer and leading innovator in the art. The exhibition also includes works by the Spinners and Weavers Group of the Pakuranga Arts Society.
