Other Cinemas - And still, it remains
This wananga is designed to gather cultural workers together to share films and discuss what it means to be producing and facilitating art during a time of multiple genocides. How do we build community focused art infrastructure that isn't reliant on funding? How do we sustain what we already have? How do we come together when often we are pitted against one another in order to build an equitable and resilient community? Who do we make art for and why does it matter? Some of these patai will be discussed over a kai without the pressure of solving them, but instead provides the places to begin the hard conversations.
Started as a series of extended conversations in 2024 at Metroland Cultures, this collaboration began as a way of sharing movies by Alaa’ Breighith and Anna Rankin and Merata Mita. It has expanded with the core goal of creating opportunities to learn from one another by continuing to share films, but also to organise space and time to do this. Working together again, we hope to center our shared commitment as artists determined to provide spaces for exchange, imagination, and food in our communities.
