Snacks is a new collection of short, salty and sweet art essays and texts. This limited edition publication features 12 ‘snack-sized’ texts by emerging writers who participated in the Chez Derriere art writing programme, hosted by Te Tuhi’s curatorial intern, Felixe Laing, from November 2022 to July 2023.

Snacks collates 12 new writers' perspectives and diverse styles on contemporary topics such as the place of the personal essay in art writing, being disappointed and disrupted by weather, how artists should engage with materials from the natural world, and exploring collaborative, artistic partnerships with AI and te taiao.

The participants are all writers while also being artists, journalists, curators, academics, poets, and designers. They are: Alena Kavka, Samantha Cheng, Ana Garcia, Mairātea Mohi, Gabi Lardies, Eleanor Cooper, Felixe Laing, Alanna O’Riley, Ardit Hoxha, Annie Bradley, James Tapsell-Kururangi and Liam Jacobson. The texts are presented as a 82-page, limited edition, A5 publication with colour inserts, designed by Gabi Lardies.

The art writing programme and publication were supported by Creative New Zealand, Contemporary Art Foundation and Auckland Council.
