Reflecting on the cultural diversity within the New Zealand Catholic Church, Scale seeks to differentiate its various attributed musical traditions from the Western framework they exist within. Webb studied four musical scales: the Indian Bhairavi Rāga, the Indonesian Pelog Gamelan scale, the Chinese Qing Shang hexatonic scale, and the Korean p’yŏngjo pentatonic scale. These scales are sung, recorded, and presented in relation to one another alongside the Western major scale, revealing harmonies and discords.
