Blaine Western is the sixth recipient of the Iris Fisher Scholarship, a Te Tuhi initiative that annually rewards an outstanding postgraduate art student in Auckland. He has exhibited throughout the country and, together with Michael Parr, won the 2012 National Contemporary Art Award. For Te Tuhi, Western exhibits his most recent body of work that investigates the relationship between architecture and social histories.
The Scholarship is named after Iris Fisher, who was an important founding member of the Pakuranga Arts Society and a driving force behind the creation of the Fisher Gallery, later to become Te Tuhi. In keeping with her vision for fostering artistic practice, the Scholarship has been established to assist postgraduate art students with their studies. Te Tuhi acknowledges the Fisher family for their ongoing involvement with the Scholarship.
