In this video essay, Ana García Jácome argues for a new history of disability for Mexico that goes beyond medical and statistical representations to one that embraces the overlooked details of people’s lives. Coupled with a scrolling timeline of archival material, she starts by analysing the language used between 1940 and 2020 for identifying and differentiating disability from intersecting concerns of disease and other factors that might have prevented people from participating in society. As the timeline format dissolves into a layering of information, Jácome makes a case for seeking out the embodiments of disability and modes of communication that have been unseen or silenced.
