Eight toi Māori carvers were hosted at Te Tuhi in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland at a wahine-led wānanga for toi whakairo from 20-22 September 2024. The hui kicked off with a kōrero from tohunga whakairo Zena Elliott, who talked about using visual storytelling in their creative practice.

The artists came together to talk about the challenges and obstacles that they face as wāhine carvers and to discuss how to support one another's practices going forward, with a view to creating a collective. They spent two days carving in the studio, sharing stories, tools and techniques.
