In October 2024, a group of 14 Māori and Pasifika artists attended a visit to Te Tai Rāwhiti Gisborne.
The kaupapa of the visit was to participate in Te Ara-i-Whiti, the annual light festival in Gisborne that showcases contemporary Māori art and artists. Additionally, the visit aimed to tautoko the opening of the artist-in-residence Ngaroma Riley's exhibition at Hoea! Gallery, focusing on Toi Māori and Te Ao Māori.
The wider road trip also included a variety of activities, such as:
→ An artist lunch to connect with local creatives.
→ Workshops led by Ngaroma Riley and Sione Monu, encouraging collaboration and skill sharing.
→ A walkthrough of the Te Ara-i-Whiti festival with curator Melanie Tangaere Baldwin, exploring the artworks and installations.
→ A meet and greet with local artists at the Hoea! Gallery.
This trip emphasized the importance of collaboration and cultural exchange within the arts community.
