Melbourne based artist Richard Lewer is the second artist in Te Tuhi’s new drawing wall programme, where artists create temporary artworks directly onto the gallery walls. Lewer is known for his delicately beautiful drawings which evocatively rework of some of life’s less pleasant elements—crime scenes, illness, horror movies. In Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, Lewer turns his attention to one of Australia’s most bizarre episodes: the Snowtown mass killings during the 1990s. Lewer’s focus is, however, less concerned with telling us the concrete facts of the case. Instead his work explores the way that places can become repositories for the psychic residue of both painful events and our deepest fears.
