Screens designed and painted by New Zealand’s foremost contemporary artists - this is the novel idea for the exhibition Artists’ Screens: The Folding Image at the Fisher Gallery.
For millennia the folding screen has played a special part in art and decor (especially Japanese). At first designed almost purely as utilitarian objects, they cam more and more to perform a decorative function. While a screen is intended to serve as a room divider (i.e. to create a movable wall standing free in space) it has also been the medium for some of the most colourful and exuberant expressions of the painter’s art. Artists are free from the conventions and restraints of formal painting and able to work in a more liberated manner.
