TV commercials have been called ‘the official art of capitalism’. Selling New Zealand is the title of a curated exhibition of commercials that have marketed, shaped, reflected and contested New Zealand identity.
The show focuses on the commercial as a spectacular intersection of entertainment value, formal aesthetic and cinematic consideration, and market forces and wider cultural imperatives.
The commercial is an art form that effectively markets, shapes, reflects and challenges New Zealand identity. Even so, commercials are generally regarded as low culture and, as such, beneath the dignity of art galleries. However, it is the contention of Selling New Zealand that moving images - commercials especially - deserve to be recognised as key influences on our culture.
