Dedicated to jewellery making, Annex is a nurturing space for contemporary jewellery practice in south-east Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Annex aims to support practitioners, as well as encouraging new makers through providing education, networking opportunities, and access to tools and equipment.

Contemporary Jewellery

$250 per term
Thursday, 6-8.30pm

Contemporary Jewellery is focused on object, sculpture and jewellery making for beginner to intermediate makers. This course offers an insight into riveting and other cold joining techniques with non-precious materials. Lessons include technical demonstrations, introducing different approaches and building a strong knowledge base from which to develop students’ own ideas. Enjoy exploring and experimenting, while being mentored by Sarah Walker-Holt, an experienced Aotearoa New Zealand contemporary jeweller.

Annex: Open Studio

$25 per day
Thursday, 10am – 5pm

Enjoy exploring and experimenting under the supervision of Sarah Walker-Holt, an experienced Aotearoa New Zealand contemporary jeweller. Annex: Open studio is a weekly untutored drop-in-style class for self-motivated jewellers who are confident working with minimal guidance. This class provides a supportive and social environment for jewellers developing their own practice.

Though prior jewellery workshop experience is preferred, practitioners of all levels of experience are welcome. Each day is $25, this includes access to shared tools and equipment. Students must bring their own materials, and a limited range of materials can be purchased from the tutor.

About the tutor

Sarah Walker-Holt completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at The University of Auckland’s Manukau School of Visual Arts in 2010, where she received numerous prizes, including the Fingers Graduating Students Award. In 2011, she won the New Zealand Contemporary Jewellery Award. Walker-Holt has exhibited both nationally and internationally and was featured in The Dowse Art Museum’s travelling show Wunderrūma: New Zealand Jewellery (2014). In 2014-15 she was mentored by Helen Britton as a participant of Handshake 2: Prentice and Prodigy. She was successively selected for Handshake 3 in 2016-17 and Handshake 5 in 2019.
