Opening Event for Liberty - Herekoretanga at Botany Town Centre

Join artist Wendy Hannah at Botany Town Centre for the opening of Liberty - Herekoretanga, an awe-inspiring installation that celebrates the achievements of women and embraces the beauty of diversity and the importance of environmental awareness. 

To signify and commemorate 130 years of women’s suffrage, the towering structure composed of 31,872 camellia flowers made from recycled bottles, will be on display at Botany Town Centre from 19 September 2023.

At 10.30am on Tuesday 19 September, Wendy, the people who contributed to and supported the making of the work, and other friends of the project, will gather by the installation at The Pavillion in Botany Town Centre to celebrate the launch.

Come along to participate in the opening festivities including performances by Taisha Tari accompanied by students from Wakaaranga Primary School. Festivities will be followed by refreshments, Everyone welcome.

The production, installation and artist support for Liberty - Herekoretanga has been generously supported by Botany Town Centre, Arts Out East, TeTuhi and the Howick Local Board.

About the Artist and the Camelia Project NZ:

In 2018, East-Auckland artist Wendy Hannah (European, Ngāti Awa, and Te Arawa descent) started the Camellia Project NZ. Wendy has been painting for 15 years, and over the last five years she has visited schools and community groups throughout Aotearoa New
Zealand, running workshops to make camellia flowers from recycled drink bottles and talking about the history of women’s rights in New Zealand alongside the importance of recycling and reducing waste.
