Expressions in Colour

‘Expressions in Colour’ is the work of 17 young adults who with informal training have produced works of unusual vigor and impact. Working with fabric, cardboard and paper and a variety of tools and acrylic paint, the artists have developed highly individualized styles.

The exhibition which made a contribution to the International Year of the Youth is sponsored by the Manukau Branch of the New Zealand Society for the Intellectually Handicapped.

As the facilitators mentioned, ‘there was no formal guidelines to follow. We simply made available time, space, materials for expression. Though the exhibition stands on its own as an achievement for the group of artists the most apparent benefit has been in the growth of the individual. We saw people developing a sense of responsibility towards themselves and their peers. Self esteem, confidence and self motivation were also developed. A key factor in presenting this exhibition is that it shows intellectually handicapped people as equal participants in the community. We discovered, in working with this group, how truly valuable that contribution can be.’
