Artist’s statement -
In 1989 I spent two months in Europe. On my return I began looking for ways of using the images I had collected. It seemed to me that if I were a painter I would be making paintings of the things I had seen: landscapes and cityscapes.
The works that came from this were about travel. As with the canoe piece there is a difference between the romantic view of travelling abroad and the reality. I used the hot air balloon as a symbol of romantic travel, a symbol that hovers over the images of domes, towers and mountains.
While this work Scene One Act One is larger than a model it is smaller than reality. I saw it rather like a stage set left standing after the people went home. The work is again made of lead sheet over a wooden and fibreglass form.
