This retrospective exhibition will bring together a selection of forty works by the late Auckland based artist, Nelson Thompson (1918 - 1989).

Thompson was closely associated with the Pakuranga region and initiated the Art Department of Pakuranga College. The artist lived, worked, taught and exhibited in the Eastern suburbs of Auckland and nationally for over forty years.

Encompassing work from his student days at the Chelsea College of Art, London to the broad range of landscape drawings and paintings, this exhibition will present a tribute to his vision of the New Zealand landscape.

It has been stated that, ‘Nelson Thompson was mainly a landscape painter... it must be added that his range included graphic design, figure studies and still-life. His still-life was, even more than that of Francis Hodgkins, set in landscape with a feeling of space, light and atmosphere.’
