This exhibition reflects some of the achievements by an invited group of contemporary New Zealand photographers. The emphasis in the selection has been to show the diversity of approach by artists in recent works that utilise photography as the medium. The exhibitors range from a few younger artists having just completed their art school training to a number of our more well known established artists.

Peter Peryer, Fiona Clark and Laurence Aberhardt are the more established of the group. Peryer photographs the ordinary which becomes, through the intensity of his images, disquieting. Aberhardt, a documentor of location produces compelling works that have an equal intensity. Fiona Clark shifts the emphasis away from the wall as display area to the floor.

The production of large scale prints is also an increasing feature of recent photographic practice. Christine Webster, Kevin Capon and Richard Reddaway exploit the impact of size. Webster’s work ‘Flesh of Love’ also explores the diptych as a format as does Kevin Capon’s work. Richard Reddaway, a Christchurch-based sculptor, investigates the shaping of photomontage constructions around the architectural dome interior format.

Likewise, Richard Mathieson uses his sculptural understanding to present works utilising photographs in their making both as floor and wall form. Fiona Pardington presents works layered with many personal associations. John Reynolds, a painter, also has a reputation as a photographer and currently works in both mediums.
