Supporting the next generation of Young Creatives with Te Tuhi
The Young Creatives programme seeks to increase the diversity of the sector’s artists, arts professionals and audiences, through working directly with young people in settings outside of mainstream education. Participants do not need to be keen artists or academic high achievers; the programme encourages young people to develop creative agency, and a sense of ownership in contemporary art and galleries.
Enabling interaction with contemporary art and artists connects young people with adults who embrace risk, experimentation and questioning. The Young Creatives programme allows participants to engage, and respond through dialogue, projects and activities. These connections help to expand thinking about what art is, what it means in society, what it means to be an artist or have a career in the arts, and how art can be used to explore personal experience. The capacities that are emphasised in this programme include emotional intelligence, resilience, risk-taking, collaboration, creative and critical thinking and negotiation.
Developing sustainable opportunities for young people is essential for the arts in Aotearoa New Zealand. This audience needs to be nurtured now to ensure the vitality and relevance of the arts in the future. To learn more about Te Tuhi’s youth programme, visit here.
